Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald Will Be Doing The Job

Barack and Michelle Obama have selected two artists that will paint their portraits–artists Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald have been chosen to execute the task. The official portraits will be housed at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, Kehinde Wiley is going to be painting Barack’s portrait while Amy Sherald will have the honor of painting Michelle.

​Wiley, is a New York-based portrait painter known for painting grandiose portraits of black people and coupling them with very colorful and proud backdrops. A lot of Kehinde’s work is inspired by Renaissance masters​, and he often incorporates hip-hop within his works. The artist has created pieces that feature Ice T, LL Cool J​, Swizz Beatz, Spike Lee, and other famous figures.

 Amy Sherald is an American painter based out of Baltimore, Maryland​. Her work is known to touch on social justice issues and is included in public collections located everywhere including The United States Embassy Dakar in Senegal, The National Museum of African American History and Culture, The National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C., and  FTI Technologies Inc. in Baltimore.
